Advent calendar – 2018 Memory Lane – 19: BMW Summer School

For the past six summers, BMW Group has run a BMW Summer School for PhD students, researchers, and industry experts. Held in the historical Study Centre Raitenhaslach of TUM in Burghausen, the BMW summer school has three tracks: poster, industry presentations, and the Lean Startup Machine. Their theme in 2018 was intelligent cars on digital roads and emotion-aware vehicle assistants.

Digitalist Group was the official Design partner for the event and was responsible for leading the Lean Startup Machine track. Together with BMW and TUM, we designed and facilitated the 4-day program where 24 Ph.D. students and researchers worked together to build a virtual startup. Throughout the program, we provided coaching for each team and lessons on co-creation, frameworks for ideation, prototyping methods and business models.

Students were able to learn in an extremely interactive way how to apply Design Thinking and Lean Startup methodologies to build their virtual startup. We introduced different tools and frameworks to create empathy for the user, environment and ethical challenges when faced with AI, emotional awareness or autonomous vehicles. Students took their initial concept through the Build, Measure, Learn loop to a final prototype which they presented on the last day.

It was a very interesting, inspiring, and successful events of 2018 and definitely one that will remain one of the highlights of 2018!
