Matomo – an alternative for analytical data in accordance with the GDPR
With the EU’s new data protection regulations soon to come into force (25 May 2018), many people have begun looking for alternatives for analyzing their web traffic.
Today, it’s not guaranteed that Google Analytics can offer what it takes to comply with the GDPR – although they’re probably working on it – but there are already functional solutions available that allow you to continue to analyse visitors to your site and comply with the GDPR. Matomo (formerly Piwik), which we already use on over a thousand websites, is one such solution.
The GDPR is itself something of a threat to cloud-based solutions where you sometimes do not know who has access to your data and in which country. Therefore, you simply need to look at either nationally-based cloud solutions or at having a physical server in your own country. With our partner Elastx we offer the latter.
Collecting data from one’s visitors is very useful, and it is possible to do so despite the GDPR, including via Matomo, the solution we have chosen. It incorporates the right to be forgotten – meaning a user wants a website to delete all the data it has collected about him or her – and the ability to choose not to be tracked at all when visiting a site. That is why we have chosen Matomo. High security, high flexibility, and we know exactly who is looking at the data collected.
Don’t hesitate to contact us today if you are interested in using Matomo if you want to be sure of having an analysis tool that can be used after 25 May 2018.
